Two local charities benefit from Christmas concerts
Donations from three Christmas concerts, combined with generous donations from choir members, has meant we have been able to donate to two very worthwhile local charities. Cheques for £600 were given to Pedal Power and Space4U.
Pedal Power acknowledged the profound difference the charity had made for Joanna Burdett (choir chair) and her husband, Chris, who was living with Parkinson's disease. Before being diagnosed, Chris was involved in a cycling club and used to cycle twice a week. Accessing this charity gave them both the ability to do something together and meet new people - significantly improving their wellbeing, too.
Pedal Power provides a wide variety of different specialist bikes for people of all disabilities. It also has specialist bikes for children and takes these out into local schools for those children who have significant additional needs in order that they may enjoy cycling. True to its vision, it employs people with disabilities in its workshop and café and has an army of volunteers escorting disabled or minority groups on short rides in the area.
Jenny McDowell, from Space4U, explained that the charity, based in Splott, helps asylum seekers and refugees who have been placed in Cardiff by the Home Office and that the money would be used to support drop-in sessions. Currently, the charity sees around 70 to 80 people at its Monday and Thursday sessions.
Besides a clothing bank, Space4U provides a food bank, English classes to enable clients to reach a level to study at college, a playgroup, help with applications for asylum, companionship and a weekly community meal.
Where possible, asylum seekers and refugees help at the charity, giving them an opportunity to contribute to the running of the group and share their talents and culture.

Welcome to Llysfaen Singers …. We are a local community choir whose members are enthusiastic individuals who enjoy singing and raising money for charities. Formed in September 2013, the choir has around 35-45 members of all abilities. No previous experience is necessary and there are no auditions, just enthusiasm to join in. We recently celebrated 10 years since our formation. See our "A Decade of Song" video. |

About the Choir....
We like to think of ourselves as a very friendly group with a wide range of backgrounds and ages. If you would like to join the Llysfaen Singers, we meet on Wednesdays at 7.30pm in Lisvane Memorial Hall. We currently perform two or three concerts a year. Why not come and see how much you enjoy singing, you would be very welcome to join us. See our welcome video that explains a bit about the choir and features our former Musical Director, Rachel Marsh. We are a community choir (singers from outside Lisvane are most welcome), and we are a registered charity; Registered Charity Number 1162703. |
